Aside from evaluating the accuracy of their models, data scientists also need to ensure that their model outputs make sense in the business context. If the model is recommending products that the company no longer sold, then there's an onus on the data scientist to work with analysts, engineers, and product managers to investigate this, not blame other departments. Collaboration and teamwork are important in any organization.

I can't speak for how well prepared the company was for data science capacity. However, the tone of this article suggests that the author may have some toxic attributes. Assuming coworkers are "lazy people" and doubting the "intellectual curiosity" of those who may not engage in journal club is one thing, but to say things like "I honestly didn’t know where they would have been without me" is a red flag.
